Every day, young people are bombarded with images of what they are told they should look like, wear, own, accomplish, or become. With just a few taps on a phone, they can scroll through hundreds of “perfect” lives that often leave them wondering, “Am I enough?”
The truth is, comparison is one of the quickest ways to lose confidence.
When we constantly compare ourselves to others, we begin to measure our worth against someone else’s journey. We forget that every person has a different story, different struggles, different gifts, and a different purpose.
One of the greatest lessons we can teach our youth is this:
You don’t have to be someone else to be valuable.
Confidence doesn’t come from having the most followers on social media. It doesn’t come from wearing the newest clothes or being the most popular person in the room. Real confidence comes from understanding who you are and recognizing that your value was never determined by someone else’s opinion.
There will always be someone who sings better, runs faster, earns more money, or has more experience. That’s life. But there is only one person who can be you.
That is your superpower.
As a young person, I spent years wondering where I fit in. Like many people, I had moments when I questioned myself and wondered if I measured up. Looking back, I wish someone had reminded me that I didn’t have to compete with anyone. My assignment was simply to become the best version of myself.
Parents, educators, and youth leaders play an important role in helping young people build confidence. Celebrate effort, not just achievement. Encourage character as much as talent. Help young people discover their strengths instead of focusing only on their weaknesses.
Most importantly, remind them that failure doesn’t define them. Mistakes are not the end of the story—they’re often where growth begins.
If you’re a young person reading this today, here’s what I want you to remember:
Stop comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle.
Celebrate your own progress.
Be patient with yourself.
Grow at your own pace.
God created you on purpose, with purpose, and for a purpose. You don’t have to earn your worth—you already have it.
The world doesn’t need another copy of someone else.
It needs the unique gifts, voice, and perspective that only you can bring.
Walk confidently.
Dream boldly.
Believe in yourself.
And never forget…
Know who you are and whose you are.
